Intrinsically disordered proteins, protein droplets, membrane-less organelles, single-molecule biophysics
Priya R. Banerjee is an expert on intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), an intriguing class of proteins that lack a rigid structure but play decisive roles in cellular physiology and pathology.
Banerjee’s work seeks to elucidate the basic physical properties of such proteins using techniques such as high-resolution optical tweezers, single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy, and microfluidics.
His lab has helped establish that IDPs, which don’t have a distinct shape, can cluster together to form liquid-like droplets with highly tunable material properties. The Banerjee lab actively collaborates with leading biologists in the field to study the function of these droplets as micro-compartments in living systems, and how they are altered in a range of human diseases.
